With near 80 percent tree cover, Gabon's forest reserves are among Africa's vastest. Logging has occurred in several cycles in certain parts of the country, yet has not been harvested as heavily in other countries due to a strong economic base from oil revenues. While these forests stand remarkably intact today, logging is expanding to new areas rapidly, and increased harvest will likely be promoted as oil reserves decline in coming years.
