Some 77 percent of Gabon is cloaked in dense, hilly forest, giving way to patchy plateaus, hair-pin rivers, and a scalloped coast. Three low mountain chains – the Massif du Chaillu, Monts de Cristal, and Monts Doudou, above – hold refuge for rare species unique to Gabon.
