African forest elephants Loxodonta africana cyclotis are considerably smaller than their savanna counterparts, easing passage through thick vegetation. Veiled in foliage, they are difficult to track to learn about their biology, ecology, or conservation status. Gabon shelters some 50,000 to 60,000 elephants, a critical sanctuary for a keystone, protected species.
