The Photographs of Carlton Ward Jr.

Hoffman Porges Gallery in Historic Ybor City
April 27- November 16, 2007

Florida is changing. One thousand new residents move here each day and 200,000 acres of natural land (larger than Pinellas County) are being converted to development each year. Florida’s original character is quietly disappearing. Vanishing Heritage shares glimpses of the real Florida. Beautiful photography explores Florida's enduring ranchlands, gulf coast nature, and everglades.

Artist Statement
Through my photography I strive to connect people to natural environments and cultural legacies, particularly those at risk of vanishing without our help. This mission has taken me to the far corners of the earth - deep in to the Amazon, the Sahara Desert, and the African Congo. But nowhere have I seen loss of nature and culture greater than what we are experiencing here at home in Florida. Nearly all of our coastlines have been developed, our water resources are facing collapse, and our rural and natural lands are being converted and fragmented at an alarming rate. While continuing to work on global issues, I have retrained my focus on Florida -- our Gulf Coast and Cattle Ranches in particular.
