One hundred miles west of Key West, Loggerhead Key hosts a 150-foot tall lighthouse built in 1856 to help guide mariners away from shallow coral reefs and sandbars where the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean converge. Named for the abundance of loggerhead sea turtles nesting on its beaches, the island is now part of Dry Tortugas National Park.
