Realm of the Panther (/25), 2020
16 x 24 in
The first time I saw this trail meandering through the swamp among cypress knees, I felt the call of the panther's Everglades home. A place so hidden and wild that it provided the panther its last safe haven in the east, at a time when hunting, persecution and habitat loss wiped out the species everywhere else this side of the Mississippi River. But a small remnant population of pumas were persevered in the watery wilderness at the southern tip of Florida. It was from these remote swamps, that the panther staged its remarkable comeback, and is now poised to inspire a movement for conserving a wildlife corridor to help the panther population continue expanding north throughout Florida, and possibly beyond.
