The delta of the Suwannee River branches into the Suwannee Sound north of Cedar Key. The 240-mile-long river is born in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge at the Georgia-Florida line and flows through the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge before reaching the Gulf. Protecting the river from over-development along its length can help maintain a viable wildlife corridor and ensure clean water for the nationally important estuary that it supplies.
